Dear Friends of the Cathedral Heritage Foundation,

We are reliving a memorable event that took place at the Cathedral on April 4th. Conductor Sir James MacMillan stepped over to a reception with donors at the rectory after he had finished rehearsal for “Voices for a Cathedral.” His remarks, and camaraderie shared, followed by the one hour concert and standing ovation says it all. As a supporter of the Cathedral Heritage Foundation, you helped make this happen, providing a free concert to the community conducted by a world renowned conductor. It would not be an understatment to say it was music for the soul!

Other news you will see below includes an introduction to our Spanish translator and narrator for our new mobile tour app that will be debuted in June.

And it’s not too late to join in the fun of our 32-question Cathedral History Hunt. Two questions have been posted every week on topics that range from art to history. Prizes will be awarded to the top trivia winners. Look for it on all of our social media channels.

Gratefully,

The Board of Directors, Cathedral Heritage Foundation

Introducing our Spanish tour translator

Silvia Alvarez de Davia is a University of Minnesota Extension Professor and Regional Educator. She moved with her family to Roseville, Minnesota, 20 years ago to pursue her Ph.D. at the U of M. Before immigrating, Silvia called Guatemala City home.

When she’s missing her family or her country, she likes to make an authentic Guatemalan dish, called Pepian. It’s a soup that combines Mayan origin spices and other flavors brought from Spain.

She’s well acquainted with historic churches, like the Basilica of Our Lake of the Rosary, a neoclassical Cathedral church in the historic center of Guatemala City. “The aspect of the Cathedral of Saint Paul that delighted me the most was the ‘Shrines of Nations,'” said Silvia. “It honors the homelands of the talented artists and workers from any countries who built the Cathedral. This part of the Cathedral shows the origin of the immigrants integrating the diverse population in Minnesota.”

Thank you, Silvia, for lending your talents to our new mobile app tour!

History Hunt Question #23

Carved into the facade gracing the archway over the front doors to the Cathedral you will see two figures that depict Archbishop Ireland’s intention that the Cathedral be used for learning about the faith, as much as for prayer. Name these two figures and what they symbolize.

We hope you follow along on the CHF Facebook, Instagram and X channels. Once we post Question 32, we will give instructions on where to email your answers. Fabulous prizes will be given for the top trivia winners!!
